SOS Amazônia is a Non-Governmental Organization, founded in the 1980s, when large areas of forests were being transformed into grazing land in the Amazon. At that time, the rubber tappers' movement in Acre was joining forces to stop deforestation and guarantee the right over their settlements. Moved by the resistance of the forest guardians, on September 30, 1988, in the city of Rio Branco, State of Acre, teachers, university students and representatives of the social movement, including the activist and rubber tapper Chico Mendes, founded the SOS Amazônia Association, having as its main objective to defend the extractive cause and to protect the Amazon Forest, supporting traditional communities. Currently, SOS Amazônia promotes environmental awareness campaigns, develops projects, proposes and implements public policies focusing on the promotion of models and practices for the preservation of biodiversity and sustainable development. These initiatives guide, on a daily basis, the duty to fulfil its mission: "to promote the conservation of biodiversity and the growth of environmental awareness in the Amazon"
